First Steps to Building Something Truly Exciting!

We look at the youngest of our six grandchildren.
With a smile that lights the sky… and breaks your heart wide open!

He has no idea what’s ahead, does he?

But, I’ll tell you this.
As he takes his first steps into the world…
He’ll fall down so many, many times.

But then…
He’ll get right back up again.
Until he can master this strange off-balance trick of walking.
Giving up is not an option. Is it?

Starting your own business is rather like that.
Or taking the lead role in running the business.

If you knew what was ahead – If you really knew – you’d wonder whether you’d completely lost your marbles!

What could be more insane in business than Going Out on Your Own?
Or taking responsibility for other people’s lives at work?

So, what does it take to fulfil this headline…
To Build Something Truly Exciting?

Today, I’m going to provide just 4 clues.
Point to the 4 Basic Roles.
Hint at The First 4 Steps.

Yep. They are basic.

But you’ll be astonished how many I’ve met…
Who strike out on their own.
Or accept leadership positions…
Without recognising that The Basics even exist!

If you can mentally… emotionally… physically… spiritually… get a grasp of these 4 Basic Roles…
You’ll stand a real chance of building ‘Something Truly Exciting’.

If you shy away from them…
Then be prepared to settle for ‘Good Enough’.

Ready?
Here they are…

  1. The Technician:     Whether a financial planner, paraplanner, compliance officer…Whatever. You’d better be better than ‘Good Enough’!
  2. The Entrepreneur:       You’re innovative, inventive, daring, outlandish, slightly scary. You don’t have to be charismatic or loud.
Just willing to go where most technicians (and angels) daren’t tread.
  3. The Manager:    Projects, systems, processes, technology.
You eat this stuff for breakfast!

You’re good at building the supportive step-by-step bridges to accomplish those visionary outcomes.
  4. The Leader:       The greatest barrier to ‘Something Truly Exciting’!

You can MANAGE projects, systems and processes.
But you have to learn to LEAD people.

    Confuse those two roles.
And you become a complete Pain in The Neck to others!

Leadership is complex, illogical, emotionally challenging and messy. Because people are!

And most technicians either cannot be bothered…
Or create havoc in other’s lives… by their confusion.

If you can face these 4 roles…And make them your future…

Then Your First Steps stand a chance of heading towards…
Something Truly Exciting!

And – years later – your eyes will still sparkle at the thought.
Just like this little fellow.
